My honest review of Evan-Moor 6th grade Science Pack for homeschool.
(Evan -Moor gave me the full Daily Science pack for 6th grade for a review for homeschool moms)
When I got my package of Evan-Moor 6th grade Daily Science pack, it amazed me at how simple this program is for the working homeschool mom. As a working mom who works outside the home, this program is a wonderful addition to my arsenal of homeschool curriculums for science.
I wished I had checked into the Evan-Moor Science program for our homeschool when my kids were younger. It would have solved my problems with planning because of lack of time because I was working a job outside the home. Evan- Moor is a pickup and go curriculum which is perfect for working parents.
Overview of Evan-Moor 6th grade Science Pack
Evan-Moor breaks each unit called Big Ideas into 5 weeks. There are 6 units in the science program. Each unit is its own unit and doesn’t tie into other units in the program.
Here is the breakdown of the units/Big Idea:
Living things and traits from parents
Environment effects on species
Earth’s axis, weather and seasons
Earth’s layers
Basic chemistry of matter and atoms
Energy of physics
Each unit offers vocabulary, reading, one hands-on activity and a review at the end of the unit. There are 5 weeks in each unit. Each day has one worksheet for the student to read and fill out. The worksheets are simple and short.
As you can see the picture of the page 1 in the student workbook its labeled day 1 and week 1. There are 5 pages of worksheets for each week. One page for each day.
It’s consumable which is great for the working mom.
Why does it matter if it’s consumable? Well, I do not have to spend time copying or printing for worksheets. It’s all bound up and ready to go. This is a time saver for me, especially as a working mom.
One time I bought a science curriculum kit, and it was so time-consuming I was drowning in printing worksheets because it was digital. I would print the pages and then bind them up in the binder system I had.
Guess what??
The day I was putting it together my cat hopped on the table to get my attention and knocked all those papers onto the floor. Therefore, I love consumable workbooks so I do not have to copy or print papers and then bind them up.
I had to pick up all those papers and put them in order before I can bind them up. This process sucked up my time which was precious to me because I was a working mom who homeschools. So it’s a huge plus that the workbook is already bound up and ready to go.
The two books shown in the picture are for the student to work through. It goes with the Teacher book well. It’s so simple that your 6th grader can work through both workbooks after you give the lesson from your book.
Here in this picture below is the Skill Sharpener book. In the picture, below is for week 1 lesson. This page on the right is about Inherited Traits which is week 1 topic of the lesson.
On the first day of the week, I would have my students go through Skill Sharpener books first to prepare for the worksheets which are a different book.
Also on the first day of the week, I would have the student read the overview in the Teacher book which is shown in the picture below. As a working mom, I would go over this with my kid so we are on the same page about what the unit will be about.
I would finish the week out by having my kid do the worksheets in the student workbook. We would come together on Friday and go over everything she learned for the week so I know she understands the material.
Evan-Moor cuts down on prep time for the working mom.
As a working mom, having these two workbooks available for the student cuts down on my prep time. There is no prep time for me because the workbooks are self-explanatory.
Sometimes the kids would want to know more about a subject such as weather then I would add books about the weather for them to read. You can add books for reading to each unit. Especially if your kids are flying through the workbooks.
The teacher book is simple for me I can just pick it up and teach which important for me as a working mom.
On the first page in the picture is for you as the teacher to review. I also have my student read it. I would do this on the first day of the week.
The 2nd page is the same copy as in the student workbook. It’s just an extra page so you know what your student is doing for day 1. I like this because I do not have to hunt down the student workbook to see what she is supposed to do for day 1. I have it all in my teacher book.
It’s so simple and a time saver for me!!
Evan-Moor science aligns with current standards.
One impressive thing to me is even though this science pack is simple, and no planning needed it aligns to current standards.
What do I mean by that?
What this means is Evan-Moor 6th-grade science program aligns to Next Generation Science and Current Science Standards.
Why is this important?
It’s important because if your student wants to go into the science field of any kind its necessary to have a curriculum that aligns to current standards.
No matter what your kid’s career or field of interest is you should always use curriculums that meet current standards. Remember, kids change their minds all the time about what they want to do when they grow up.
It’s affordable.
As a homeschool mom, I am always on the lookout for budget-friendly curriculums. It’s super affordable. Here is the breakdown of costs on the three books I showed in here.
Teacher edition is $29.99
Student workbook is $7.99
Skill Sharpeners is $9.99
The total cost for a great 6th grade Science curriculum is $47.97. One year affordable full science curriculum for 6th grade.
To wrap it up- Why I like Evan-Moor Science
As a working mom, Evan-Moor 6th-grade science is pack full of information and simple as picking up and go. Time is very limited for me and my kids. There are no fluffs or busywork in any of the materials.
It is easy to supplement the curriculum with library books to delve more into each week’s topic. The flexibility of the program is amazing therefore if you have a library card it’s easy to find books to fit your week’s topic.
It’s affordable which is important to me because I need an affordable curriculum that also meets current science standards. I work a job outside the home because I have to help with finances which means I need affordable curriculums.
Its aligned with current standards which is a huge relief for me. This gives me full confidence I am giving my children a solid science education.
Where do I find Evan-Moor Science Curriculum
I included links for each book shown here below. I also included grade levels if you are interested in seeing other grade levels. The Teacher Edition does come in an E-book if you choose to do that. I prefer the paperback so I do not have to worry about printing them out plus its the same price regardless.
